have to be honest, the cos-playing is a bit too much for me, although i respect people who do it.
I've always wished to live in Japan since I was a child, the tradition and culture is just amazing.

Anyway i never have been in Japan ( but i would like to ) so i cant really know if this anime culture is that strong there.
I've been to japan. Anime is popular for sure (there's like, an entire section of One Piece food at the 7/11s) but by and large the average Japanese person is just as weirded our by the "WTF Japan" images as you are. They're actually really conservative on average, which is part of why cosplay stuff happens so openly there. They're not going to do something as socially awkward as point out that what you're doing is ridiculous, so people can do a lot of eccentric stuff.
anime has been a part of japanese culture since before 1980s. The golden period for it being the dragonball era - 1990s with the highest subscription rate of shonen jump(might be typo)
There are many adults in their 30s and 40s that are still big fans of anime
Its might be a surprise to us, but to them...its their childhood
Best part about Japan imo, besides that they are uber polite to customers, is that they have festivals everywhere

Living and being a tourist there is much different.
A lot of employee there have to work for a very long hours.
Not only that, it's very costly to live in Japan especially Tokyo
