Already #1 by 50%, TI5 is likely to generate a prize pool comparable to the entire history of StarCraft earnings for all 3000+ tournaments.

In future years Dota 2 will continue to grow making the current prizes and player base seem small. In a few more years schools and cities will begin have their own dota 2 teams/clubs. Dota 2 will continue to dominate esports as it grows until someone invents and distributes cheaply to the public a new medium for competition that is superior to monitors, mice, and keyboards - or until some world war wipes out the infrastructure. Merely new games will not be able to displace dota 2 from this position. But they will try. Eventually other games will fill smaller niches as Dota 2 expands the opportunity and demand for esports.

I honestly don't think that dota esports will be dead anytime soon, since the entire scene just keeps growing. I think DotA ( and I think LoL ) are stable enough to keep existing. But that's just a guess...

              Vaikiss`742.

                ofc it will be dead

look at how many new teams enters pro scene ? (NONE) all the veterans plays in pro teams

its either gonna die out when all the vet's retired or its gonna go downgrade skillwise bigtime

                BenaoLifedancer

skillwise its gonna decline but thats not our job to fix anymore.

                  Hassan

It's nice and all but a little bit misleading since sites like that one don't show the full LoL earnings.

wow look at hearthstone. Spend $300 on packs and you can RNG your way to tournament winnings

there's a difference between pub skills and teamgame pro skills.

most of the new c*nts are just pub players that play op shit and then fail miserably when against decent pro players that even playing like shit, rape them.

                          L > BLACK MAGE PARTY

New players still popping up through EEL and NEL.

Arteezy a year ago, now Suma1l for example.

Who knows more young stars will pop up as they see the big money in dota

                            Crudude

                              Look at Soccer:
There is barely ever new teams and the same big teams win every year and get bigger but the sport still grows and new younger players keep coming through

In soccer the new teams are created from the bottom (T4 teams) and take a while if ever to work themselves to an elite stage. If someone stars in a team though a better team will take their player

This is the way I see DOTA going...
Navi is like a Manchester United of DOTA

You can't say a game has died out just because the overall skill got lower. You know how batshit crazy good people were at any sports ages ago? Yeah and they are still healthy as ever.

                                Vaikiss`742.

there is bazilion small football teams all over the world and they play the same game at close enuff same level

unlike at dota the difference is actually insanely big everything ends after time comes

who said the game died out? or will anytime soon?

Well here is one for you with Dota 2 being so easy on a computer graphically and everything else that helps a lot of countries play this game.

Where as this maybe one reason for the lack of American players besides well the commitment for reward is pretty low. By that I mean the obvious American prefers is call of duty and camping action.

This is why I believe US servers is all Peruvian and Spanish speakers this is a game their poor country can access ;)

                                      the realm's delight

                                        Filthy

One thing that helps Dota is it doesn't rely on sweet graphics or anything it's got great staying power and no matter how much money someone has they can't buy wins.

The reason the money is so high is valve. They're the biggest platform outside of consoles and even if you don't play any valve games you're exposed to them as a PC gamer since something like 90% of digital sales are through steam. TI is all user funded through compendiums basically and valve makes a huge profit. Look at the other tourneys, TI dwarfs them. Only seen a couple others like last years Asian championship over a million.

                                              Livin' Real Good

Players are getting better and better (despite most of the community being trash at this game) just cause veterans quit, doesn't mean the skill level will go down, Dota 2 hasn't even been main stream for very long, heck, even League of Legends barely went main stream in 2012/13, you have tons of companies making MOBA's too, there's a reason for that, cause they're the new in thing. CoD and BF pretty much killed FPS, they oversaturated the market, and now with the rise of PC gaming, gamers won't something else besides a generic console FPS, and MOBA's are what's now being used to feel that void. Counter strike is the only FPS thriving competitively, why? Because PC gaming is on the rise, and nobody wants to play generic console FPS anymore, even Halo died competitively. Who the fuck is excited about Halo 5? No one besides a few casual fans, and even then casuals don't care about it anymore, and especially the new generation kids that grew up on CoD, that never experienced Halo 2 and 3.

THERES TONS OF NEW YOUNG TALENT, so don't fucking say things like that, you got Arteezy who is a prime example of this, and Sumail, and who know's what other players who have yet to be noticed. Same thing happened with fighting game players, when the legends quit, everyone was saying that it would never be the same, now you got a new generation of players who are doing way more things than the OG's ever could, why? Cause were in the information age, and it's 10x more easier to learn Dota 2 thanks to the internet being flooded with it, and the player base being bigger than it has ever been cause of that fact that it's mainstream.

My final argument is that the NBA is twice as hard to play in now, then it was to play when Jordan was playing, the defense is way tighter, and way more organized, not to mention the average skill of a pro has gone up immensely. Could Jordan do the same thing he was doing back then, if he were in his prime today? I don't think so, he'd be AMAZING, but not Air Jordan.

                                                  Dire Wolf

I don't want to go way off topic with nba but Jordan would still crush it in today's game. For one they made hand checking illegal so he would blow by defenders easier but the biggest reason is that teams were more stacked in Jordan's era. Contracts were way different and the leave wa more top heavy. I mean Jordan's Bulls beat teams with Shawn kemp plus Gary Payton, shaq and penny, Karl Malone and Stockton, and that's just the finals. Any of those teams would be finals favorites right now. On the flip side Jordan's teams would also be weaker but look at how lebron pushed a crap team to the finals. Jordan could certainly do it.

                                                    Livin' Real Good

I thought about the less brutal physical contact thing, that's why i said he'd be amazing, but not sure if he'd be Air jordan, but who am i to talk about Jordan's limits. I think a better example would of been, humans get better and better at things, a good example is running a mile, back in the 1940's people thought running a mile in 4 mins was IMPOSSIBLE, then it was done, even 6 minutes in 1980's was insane, people thought you had to be insanely fit to do that, now you have people like who have been running it under 6 since middle school.

Even kids on Skateboards are doing more than what a early 2000's/90's pro were doing, BELIEVE ME. You see 16 years olds who were better than some pro's in their prime already. You got kids kick flipping holly wood high 16 stair set at age 15, back then, that was the grand finale of a professional skate tape. Not saying it's easy now, cause it's steal insanely hard, it's just not godlike status hard like people thought it was.

The new salary cap rules and max contracts make it hard to assemble a team like that. Closest thing we have had is OKC and they keep getting derailed by injuries. And the heat with wade bosh and lebron were a super team kind of like Jordan and pippen + rodman, but wade and/or bosh kept getting hurt there too. It's just not possible these days to put two huge superstars on the same team without having like zero bench. Like the current cavs. Top heavy with lebron, love and irving and the rest of the team blows and are a bunch of vets on minimum deals.

they need to help amatuer scene to develop instead of just taking money out of every tournament organizer and putting their retarded cosmetics everywhere where its possible to be put

i mean yeah they are a company so they have to make profits but come fuckign on only place where they aren't greedy fucks is international but again thats where they are greediest fucks too becouse of compendiums n shit

                                                                                      edictzero

                                                                                        Crudude

The total prize pool is also higher then the Cricket world cup and Rugby world cup (both in top 5 most watched world tournaments)

2015 Cricket World Cup prize pool was $10.2m, Each team has a squad of 15 players and background staff to split their money.
It's also a tournament that only happens every 4 years

Compare those numbers to TI, especially the fact that TI is every year. It's completely insane how much bigger DOTA's biggest event is compared to the world's second most popular sport's biggest event

                                                                                          Tento komentář byl upraven

In every game/sport so far players were only getting BETTER, how do you come to conclusion that skill level will decline, it makes no sense.

                                                                                            Dire Wolf

Yeah but that's also cus TI costs valve practically nothing to host. They rent out a venue in Seattle for a week. They host games on a network they already have. That's it. Doesn't cost hardly anything to bring a hundred teenagers over from China. Are teams responsible for their own accommodations?

And valve pledges a portion of all compendiums, many which are bought by people who won't even watch. Does the cricket world cup pledge a share of all merchandising to the prize pool? Doubt it, that money is kept by the people running it as profits.

Dota pledges 25% of compendium sales, it's almost 15,000,000 so they've sold around 60,000,000, which is probably like 40% their users cus you can buy the cheap one for $10 or higher leveled ones. Dota2 had over 11 million unique players last month. So it's not that absurd, almost everyone buys a compendium.

                                                                                              Vaikiss`742.

if there was possiblity to buy compendiums irl for normal sports

football would probably have billions of dollars as 1st place prize

                                                                                                Beserker786

in real matches you pay for tickets, and get a seat to watch the match...

                                                                                                  Dire Wolf

And in American pro sports the players get paid salaries which are contractually guaranteed for the season regardless of winning or losing usually. You get small bonuses for winning playoff games and the title. Dota's a lot more like a tennis or golf pro who only gets money from tournaments.

                                                                                                    Vaikiss`742.

so do teams who plays for teams

like eg or navi or alliance or whatnot any other pro team they get salaries and percentages of tournament winnings

actually even smaller teams sponsored by smaller things get salaries or covers for tournament participations i was in couple teams like that myself

                                                                                                      Tento komentář byl upraven

It is because of the medium that Dota will ultimately eclipse all previous sports. It is not possible to experience professional sporting events in the way you can a pro dota game - to see what the players see, to rewind and replay whenever YOU choose, to view the game from any camera angle you want. Besides this, unlike major sports people can play the game at home so they retain and nourish a personal interest and understanding of the gameplay.

Also there is more action in a dota game than in any sport. In dota ten players are can all be making some play at the same time the entire game - not the same play together (like football) - not standing an watching most of the game like most pro team sports. In Dota all ten players are engaged every second of the entire game. Even if they are hiding, standing still waiting to attack or evade a gank it adds suspense. Dota is simply a superior entertainment experience to all real life sports.

Barring world war, or some truly global catastrophe the destroys modern societies, Dota 2 will become an iconic game played by people of all ages in all countries. Advancing technology drives free-time to occupy an ever increasing percentage of peoples lives, and entertainment is how nearly everyone will choose to use that time in every culture.
