i got my bachelor's diploma this july (15th i think?) and i had my master's "exam" this week (was basically a freebie, they openly admitted they are gonna try to enroll as many students as possible across our specialities) which will take 2 more years so i'm far from done generally speaking

also finally moved out of the fucking dorm, after 4 years of living with my troglodyte roommates and neighbours, living alone is like a totally different tier of existence. shortly before i moved out i broke their best chair & when i left i took our electric kettle, fuck them hehehehe

disillusioned with software dev? i kinda am too (though i suspected something like this might happen), my job is pretty boring and i just do menial tasks where the most difficult thing is usually figuring out what the fuck am i even supposed to do, since we have shit documentation. at least i get to work from home for now and it's not too demanding. i treat programming more as a means to an end than a genuine hobby now and basically don't do or study anything IT/CS related outside of my immediate responsibilities.

did you get a chance to have an actual dev job, btw? (outside of internships and whatnot)

are Russian bachelor programs 3 years long? Thought they're 4

also finally moved out of the fucking dorm, after 4 years of living with my troglodyte roommates and neighbours, living alone is like a totally different tier of existence. shortly before i moved out i broke their best chair & when i left i took our electric kettle, fuck them hehehehe

not gonna lie moving out will probably be the highlight of my studies, never have I encountered animals this disgusting (albeit were sharing toilets and showers with 20 ppl, probably that's the problem), toilets regular clogged with shit, showers clogged with hair so I have to stand in their feet yeast water while showering, "kitchen" full of moulding shit which makes me surprised that we never had issues with cockroaches

taking the electric kettle is the least you can do to get compensated for living there

                                        disillusioned with software dev?

Yeah for sure, but I also have to say I kinda went into computer science for the wrong reasons which might be why. When I was 17 all I could think about is that sitting in front of pc for 10h a day while making big cash and being sup3r h4ckz0r could be the best thing to happen to me, when in reality software jobs seem to be incredibly boring, low creativity, high pressure (fuck scrum all my homies hate scrum) jobs

theoretical stuff is kinda cool tho, research also seems fine but both are hard to get into and pay much less (here at least) so it doesn't quite seem worth

my job is pretty boring and i just do menial tasks

pretty much what I've heard from other ppl as well. I guess an option could also be to just scrap coding and try and get into management but that doesn't look quite interesting either, running after a bunch of people 24/7 to try and get some low quality product shipped

did you get a chance to have an actual dev job, btw? (outside of internships and whatnot)

Sadly not, because I will lose my scholarship/student support when I start earning too much, so I never bothered. Worked as tutor for an intro course last semester, that's about all the work experience I have, but it was disillusioning enough to the point I can already tell I cba working, even when it's 3-4 years until I'll actually have to start working full time. Gonna try and get a job for next winter because I'll have a very low workload at uni, to save some money and most likely move abroad to study something else.

takes like 30 minutes for the water to run (~10cm height) when the drain is clogged. the strategy is to just let the water run and flood the whole room, since theres several other drains there

                                                  bachelor's are 4 years here, i enrolled in 2016.

the kettle was technically "mine" (insofar as me my only other roommate at the time paid split the price with the agreement that once either of us leaves i pay the other half and take it) and it is indeed the very least i could do. and the bastards left me to deal with yearly room renovations on my own AGAIN (2nd year in a row). last year i had to find and buy the exact same wallpaper my idiot roommate bought because he didn't buy enough rolls, prepare the room so that the worker can come in and do the job, and spend several nights sleeping in a room with displaced furniture, freshly glued wallpaper and closed windows (in july @ 25-30C heat). this year almost the entire section left early cuz covid, so i had to manage the renovations for an entire section, call everybody to get them to pay their share (very cool and exciting activity considering we're basically total strangers since i never talk to these people and i fucking dread phone calls and i had to call like 10 people and convince them im not a scammer) and buy and carry the fucking supplies on foot. i couldn't get either of my roommates to pay (because i couldn't fucking contact them) so it's only fair that i took the kettle (it broke after 1 use btw =)) )

one of my motivations behind getting into software dev was the fact that i didn't mind solving problems, except of course all the actual problems are solved by higher-ups (and theyre usually boring and tedious shit anyway, huh) and i get literal ape jobs, javascript-monkey - that's me! still would rather do this job than like 95% of other jobs.

cba to study something else either, i don't even know what would be interesting, like, i kinda like philosophy i guess but it's practically useless (and the curriculum's probably gonna be garbage - not that i have an ability to enroll somewhere without losing time + money)

we had no floor drain in our "bathroom" and we had a separate scoop for it so whenever the water spills out of the tub (which is 100% of the time, especially considering the shower handle broke like every month and you had to spray insane amounts of water just to get some on your body) you could scoop it back into the tub. of course, whether you do that or not depends entriely on your common decency (which is statistically very low in hоmo dormitus)

Yeah same, or at least that's what I enjoyed while studying, sadly real life isn't anything like implementing some algorithmic games

Maybe you should still try and study something else, unless you really don't care of course. I'll ofc keep my options open to go back to code monkeying, but before that I'll gladly "waste" a year to try and test other courses, see if they're more appealing etc

Probably this situation is much harder for you though since you're in Russia on a visa right? Seems hard to just test stuff put

nah i really don't give a shit nearly enough to go and study something else, i have enough stuff to worry about for now, i still have to get my documents in order and stuff

Probably this situation is much harder for you though since you're in Russia on a visa right? Seems hard to just test stuff put

nah, not anymore actually. i finally got citizenship so now i can stay indefinitely - which is ironic, because atm i'd like to come home for some time, but can't, because covid (which is temporary) and because there's a real chance that i'll get "caught" at or near the border and conscripted in ukranian army (and now that i'm a citizen, i'm eligible for conscription here as well), apparently they don't give a shit that i studied in russia for the past 4 years and they don't give a shit that i'm a citizen there - from their pov, i'm a true хохол and gotta serve.

and it seems it'll have to stay that way until i'm 27 which is SIX years from now. i'd really like to visit, i haven't been home since 2018 and i'm super nostalgic for my hometown and regret not getting out more during my summer/winter vacations. our family cat is currently 13 years old and will definitely be gone by the time i'm 27, and my grandma has been unwell these past years (especially when i last left the town) so she might be gone too and i feel like a giant dick because i've been rly aloof these past years and especially when we last met (i've been in a bad mental state myself) and i know i'm the person she cares the most about by a large margin. i'll probably get to the point where i'll just take the chance and come visit anyway, 27 seems like a lifetime away from where i am right now, i'll probably be an entirely different person

i mean id rather not die but id also rather have free healthcare, too bad this country full of racist hillbilly morons brainwashed into supporting politicians who don't care abt the interests of poor people like them xd

                                                                                      Chairman Mao is Dearest

in germany once you have completed an undergrad program (in this case, comp soy for me) you are not allowed to do another one, except for special scientific reasons (think, i was doing a phd in computer science including learning or something, i might be eligible to do another undergrad/grad program to study neuroscience)

hence why i have to move abroad; i'd like to get into biomedical engineering/neuroengineering but i am not eligible to enter grad programs in germany because i took no physics/biology/chemistry courses, meaning i'll have to do another degree elsewhere or extend my current program for ~2 years which I wouldn't be able to finance

my plan is to try and move to the netherlands, study medicine (undergrad program), then decide what to do (grad in neuroscience, med school is an option etc). luckily support for students in the netherlands is much better than germany, even for foreign students.

                                                                                        Chairman Mao is Dearest

on another note, how long is conscription in ukraine? would you be forced to go to the army for years or is it just a short program? might be worth to just do that maybe

                                                                                          LegendaryHD

Yep, it's only in America that they have pay too much attention on racism, and that's the cause. People in there are also anti science saying that this whole corona virus doesn't exist, and look now they are number 1.

                                                                                            Shou

^racism issue is weird, cuz this dumbass country has history of awful stuff so it’s not so simple to just not deal with it anymore, but maybe people could just you know, not be racist. But yeah it’s mostly just dumb Christian morons like I said before. Anti science is part of that.

                                                                                              one syllable anglo-saxon

wait are you not allowed to get a second degree at all or do you mean that you'll have to pay for it 100% on your own? because in russia afaik you can't get a second degree for free either, but you can if you pay. it's nice to be able to move abroad for studying anyway, though it's pretty stressful. i entertained the thought of studying programming + biology in a sort of tandem when i was a teenager, but biology is total residentsleeper for me, i spent the entirety of my 9th grade biology doing jack shit with my buddy in the back of the class & not paying attention at all

on another note, how long is conscription in ukraine? would you be forced to go to the army for years or is it just a short program? might be worth to just do that maybe

18 months, 12 if you have a degree (which they wouldn't recognize anyway lol). way too long, that's a year and a half down the drain. even if it was like 3-4 months (at which point i'd be ready to bite the bullet, 90 days is not that bad), there are other concerns: a) will i face any consequences for basically dodging (from their pov) the draft and getting a citizenship of a "hostile" country; b) if i serve, will i face any consequences in russia (i imagine they wouldn't take kindly to me serving in army for a country that hates their guts).

also i don't imagine they have vegan menu options so i'd probably have to eat animal products again and i really don't wanna have that on my conscience even if i'm "forced" (though this is also a concern with the russian army, hopefully if i'm drafted, i'm drafted into a place with some fucking shops on its territory)

                                                                                                one syllable anglo-saxon

oh yeah also i imagine i would hear a lot of fashy stuff while i'm there, so that's a nice bonus, can't wait to glorify ww2 nazi collaborators to own the vatniks

                                                                                                  LegendaryHD

                                                                                                    L.

So the only plan is to try and keep dodging the draft for the next years? That really sucks

Russian army especially seems full of rednecks, if I recall correctly there's a lot of harassment coming your way as a low ranked soldier. Personally don't think I'd serve either, but going to jail for dodging draft doesn't seem worth either
