mostly the laning phase. if you improve it you can get to 3 or 4k easily. learn how to creep aggro, when to farm camps, when to be agressive and where to place wards in a certain situaton. i would recommend you to go on youtube and watch as many free gameleap content as you can and watch pro replays (for timings on items mostly and after what item you should focus on ganking)

watch replays of pros, then watch your own.Figure out mistakes, learn. Farm better, ward better. Narrow hero pool to master a few heros that you can play in different roles. God I hope that isn't actually you in your avatar photo... that is some stupid shit with the knife.
analyise high mmr player replays, if you can catch some boosters/smurfs while boosting in your mmr then add them and watch their games or ask them questions
that's the best way to get better, even faster than gameleap/pvgna.
i'd also highly recommend to watch every video from professor fierce, they're old but beyond GOLD
Nothing beats 1 on 1 convo or gameplay with higher skilled players.
And after playing with Cookie and watching Fierce, I can say I qualify for high 3k (from2k). :D
If we believe this Thread, you need to improve your IQ to get better. Only Genius' have high MMR.
laning phase is overrated, a really better player will probably win in mid-game no matter how much advantage you have from the lane. also i feel like you need to be able to exploit enemy weaknesses if you want to reach like 4k. in example if an enemy has a farmed slark but your team has good teamfight, you just group up, get vision and win fights because the enemy , even if ahead, isnt that good at 5v5 fights..
so id say decision making is the most important skill to have. i'd know, coz i lack it.
Thanks for all the information that you guys gave, wasn't expecting this many wise and intellectual comments. BTW its not me in the profile, I'm just an arsenal fan, it's a pun.
Okay, so some saying that you have to good at laning, others positioning and game sense.
I usually lose a match when i have a hard lane and my hero is not that good against jungle creeps so I can't even farm their plus in pubs people are not that cooperative. I lose out early game and then it becomes really hard when other team starts pushing towers preventing from having any map control. In this situation, how would a high skill player play and how will a low skill player respond to it?
You don't understand enough dota yet. Give it 6 months to a year
And you split push them to death.
Play more games 389 games is not enough you're not even in the GITGUD category yet you're still in the Getting to know the game, also try playing support so that you will learn map awareness and positioning.
farming patterns and using your skills to farm jungle is what made me jump from 2k to 3k because I'm always the most farmed person in my team. don't just stand in mid lane and have a stare down with the enemy team, go farm somewhere and if you cant farm get some pick offs with smoke since the enemies also staring at your mid. Go buy at least 1 ward even as a core if no one really likes to buy them because wards really wins games. I suggest not muting your teammtes even if how toxic they are because they can still give you some information. What I hate the most though is people not knowing when to fight or not. So know when to fight, know your power spikes and theirs too.
oh and i jumped from 2k to 3k from also spamming storm so go spam your best hero you know that can always contribute to the team regardless of teammates or enemies picks
Farming for now
Me and fx basically focused on improving farm and both of us got used to shitting on scrublords quickly
I got to 2k by spamming AM and void first/second pick
Anything is possible you just gotta believe in yourself

I have recently started playing seriously. I have like 400 hours in dota2.
What mistake I should improve to get better at the game or what mistake does separate a high skill player from a low skill player?
