Probably party mmr players who cap out there. And probably players who calibrate there and stop. Idk, I haven't played for a couple years on this account and this is the first time I calibrated since medals got introduced. My mmr is 1k less than it used to be and I got ancient 6 from which I came up to ancient 7 rather quickly.
As long as I don't have int feeders in my team I'll get past it pretty quickly though.
The same reason why the highest win rate guy stay at legend 7. And always play on normal match when he actually a divine+ player.
You need around 4400 mmr to get ancient 7 or
4200 solo mmr and 3200 party or
4000 solo mmr and 3400 party or
3700 solo mmr and 3700 party or
3200 solo mmr and 4200 party or
500 solo mmr and 4400 party
something like that
you can get ancient 7 without even playing 1 solo mmr game. then there are players who only play party and have around 4,6k-9k party mmr and are stil ancient 7 because the only way getting divine is by having solo mmr around 4600
Yes, the fact that non-Divine medals calculate party MMR into your rank placement is why the Ancient 7 population is so crowded. You can get Archon/Legend players who just play with higher skilled friends in party ranked and they will earn an Ancient medal.
On top of that, the gap between A7 and Divine seems to be the greatest MMR gap between ranks. Every time I've ranked up I immediately see my "MMR percentage" until the next rank. (I.e. upon ranking up you'll be 20% or less progressed into your next rank or so.) This is not the case for A7 > D1.
My Party MMR is super low at like 3.4k so I'm not sure if that boosted my solo medal, but I got A7 at 4.2k, and didn't see a percentage for rank-up until 4.5k, and I hit D1 at 4.6k. I've read that people hit A7 around 4.1k-4.4k depending on your party rank. Theoretically your solo rank could be even lower if your party ranked friends are significantly better than you.
^ I'm pretty sure your medal did end up being boosted — I'm Ancient 4 with 4.2k and not even seeing the progress percentage atm, while having no party ranked games this season.
But yeah, Ancient 7 is the most populated purely because that's the highest medal to which party mmr counts.
^everyone with party mmr calibrated is boosted in medal. Because your party mmr is uncalibrated, then your medal is purely from your solo mmr
Most of my friends are Ancient 7 now although they had problems getting Ancient 2 in previous seasons.
Thats why only divine+ actually means that you put the effort to do it solo. And without the knowledge how to carry the game from whatever position you play, you would never do that.
