I'm actually immortal player but I say the support stay in base.. For safety reasons!
I'll try to answer as a Herald player support playing on a safelane
Or does it completely depend on how well you can control the non-aggro of creeps to not mess up the lane equilibrium?
Herald response: Try to attack off the aggro radius whenever possible. Assuming its not possible and sometimes you see a potential of a deny especially on the range creep, you can harass more aggressively (and safely) while trying to deny when the enemy pulls off. I prefer to allow the carry to balance the lane whenever possible (unfortunately many herald carries do not even understand what is balancing). If the opponent setup is less aggressive in early game, I'll try to move off to pull the lane to help in the balancing and deny 1 creep via small camp. If its aggressive early game opponent, I'll babysit the carry because once its 2 vs 1 and the carry is off position, there is high likelihood that he will be killed.
Is it also sometimes needed to autoattack creeps if you get double waved or push the wave a little if you want to get a pull off?
Herald Response: You can use the tower to help balance double waved opponent creeps. I'll rather focus on denying than trying to autoattack and screw the carry LH. Yes, you can coordinate with your carry to push the wave a little to pull off camps especially if you have the upper hand in the laning phase. Another consideration is when mid carries are missing, you may want the lane to be closer to your tower so that you can easily retreat (if the fight does not turn to your favour) and have the tower buff even during engagement. Same thing if your Pos 2 is coming to your lane, draw the opponent closer to your tower so that your Pos 2 can flank the opponent.
There are just too many scenarios, for example your carry is off to the jungle, you see a kill potential at mid or offlane, you may want to do a quick push before rotating.
^ *I just have to clarify 5000x i am a herald to make sure you know i am self aware but have this be a futile effort to conjure a shred of fucking hope that you dont read mt shit click on my profile see my rank laugh turn around and jerk off to some top quality hentai where the cum does NOT look like fucking marshmellow foam or some shit my god that shit is rigged, in a nutshell i am a herald and should just shut the fuck up because only immortals matter even though their gameplay is about as fun to watch as watching my leg be amputated*
Just pick a casting support and pull waves into the hard camp and you dont even have to worry about autoattacking :)
You should try to avoid messing up the lane equilibrium as much as possible... Don't stand on the lane, but try to attack the enemy heroes from the sides. That way you are not as likely to pull the creep agro that will mess up the last hits for your core. And of course, casting your spells on enemy heroes does not pull creep agro, so you could try casting your spells if the enemy creeps are there.
And trust your instincts... In my dumpster tier experience, I have found that pulling on the safelane is not generally a good idea. I only do it, if it is a no brainer (lane at enemy tower) or when the carry asks me to. The core players are so bad, that if you surprise them by pulling, they will usually die... And that is easily at least a 500 gold hole it puts them in every time. The cores have asked me to pull and I have said that they will die, if I do, and they still insist on it, so I go pull and they die almost 90% of the time... On the offlane, you can pull more liberally, as the heroes played there are stronger in the early game and enemy core isn't usually build for that lvl 3 fight...
And on the safelane, you generally don't want to push the lane ever. The best place for the equilibrium to be is right outside of the tower range at your tower. So that if the enemy decide to go at your core, they will be in tower range. Those towers are nasty in the early game. My god how many stupid deaths would be avoided if people just wouldn't dive the towers at 300hp...

Just knowing where the balance is to autoattacking and positioning. Is there a such thing as too much autoattacking lane as a support to zone or trade resources? Or does it completely depend on how well you can control the non-aggro of creeps to not mess up the lane equilibrium? Is it also sometimes needed to autoattack creeps if you get double waved or push the wave a little if you want to get a pull off?
